An image (from the Latin imago) is the representation, resemblance and appearance of something. It is also a word that has manifold applications, for we also refer to a sculpture, effigy or painting as an image. An image in optics is the reproduction of an object, and it is produced by the convergence of light beams coming from the object itself and passing through a lens or optical apparatus to be projected on a screen. We also use this term to symbolise a poetic vision or to signify the set of features that distinguish a person or entity-as, for example, the public image. Many are the meanings concerning the word image. The concept mostly used refers to visual appearance, so the term is taken to signify a visual representation; however, it is also necessary to take into account the existence of auditory, olfactory, tactile, synesthetic, virtual, mental and many other types of image.
