摘要

Waste generation represents a major task of all municipal governments, which requires experts from interdisciplinary areas to working together to develop means using a 'cradle to cradle' approach to create an avenue for sustainable natural resources management. Particularly, recycling of organic wastes plays a significant and positive role in restoring the nutrient cycles of our mother earth. Thus the wastes are not wastes anymore but are resources that we need to recover from the waste stream. Wastes generated around the world are diverse in nature requiring efficient and competent technologies to treat the wastes in a sustainable and cost-effective way. ''International Conference on Solid Waste - Moving Towards Sustainable Resource Management (ICSWHK2011)'' was thus hosted to provide a platform for the academics, industries, policy makers and the governments; enabling them to understand the social and technological developments and issues of waste management around the world with a perfect niche for interaction. About 408 participants attended the conference with 133 oral presentations and 66 poster presentations. Besides, there were 13 keynote addresses on different areas of waste treatment and management. Thanks to the participants, who made the conference a successful event that served the purpose. Selected papers that have the element of 'Biological treatment' were reviewed and published in this special issue.
