Fifty-seven fusion welded joint specimens containing artificial flaws (IP, LF, CR) after automatic ultrasonic testing (AUT) were subjected to tensile testing at a very low temperature of LN{sub}2 (liquefied nitrogen). Estimation of fracturetensile strength was made using Raju-Newman equation and WES2805 procedures under K{sub}k criterion based on two measurements the inspection results using AUT, and the observation of fractured surfaces. This paper reports problems of an equivalent flawview estimation procedure of WES2805 by tensile test results and FEM analysis, and proposes a new procedures in its place. Also reported is the effectiveness of fracture tensile strength estimation using AUT results.
