Development of MCFC Stack for 1 000 kW Class Power Plant

The molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) is expected to be put into commercial use early in the next century. This new type of electric power generation system has a higher thermal efficiency, reducing CO_2 emission. IHI has participated in the MITI 'New Sunshine Program" from 1993 and has carried out MCFC stack development for a 1 000 kW class MCFC power plant under a contract from NEDO and MCFC Research Association. Load tests of the plant was performed from August 4, 1999 until January 28, 2000. The plant achieved 1 000 kW load at the November 5, 1999. The results of the load tests of the stacks in the power plant are described.
