Analytical examination of vibration interaction between pipes and support structures during earthquakes

Vibration interaction between pipes and support structures, and the effect of friction and the gap between pipes and supports on the response of pipes, which are not considered in the present seismic design of plant piping systems, wereinvestigated analytically. The vibration interaction is composed of the interaction between pipes and supports and that of the pipes. The latter interaction is considered to suppress the response of the pipes, which is produced by a difference in theirresponse phase, and decrease the seismic response of supports. Numerical analysis of actual piping systems was performed using a simplified model considering the above interactions to investigate these effects on the seismic response of supports. Theresults showed that the seismic response of the support decreased by about 30% in the system of loop pipes and support by the interaction of pipes, and the response decreased due to the presence of the gap between the pipes and support stoppers.
