Fusion devices require materials that can sustain a high fluence of high energy neutrons. Conceptual Design Activity (CDA) for the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF) started in February 1995 as part of the IEA cooperative program. In the IFMIF deuterons produced by linear accelerators are focused on a liquid Li target to generate neutrons. Thethermal and fluid dynamics were analyzed at a target with free surface. The analysis showed that there would be no boiling. For the analysis, the commercial software code was improved to take account of the heating caused by deuteron beams. Furthermore, the analysis used 2 steps for better accuracy in calculation.
