摘要

Digital photography for remote diagnosis of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) has much to offer. Even in developed countries, person-power shortages have surfaced as fewer and fewer ophthalmologists are willing or trained to screen infants for ROP. In emerging economies, this person-power problem is amplified, as more infants survive prematurity, yet there are perilously few people who know how to diagnose and treat ROP. Cameras can be used by non-ophthalmologists, are readily available (but expensive), and offer reliable results in most cases. With internet access available worldwide, it is easy to imagine centralized screening stations that offer expertise in the diagnosis of ROP. Imagine a nearly real-time assessment of ROP, with pictures interpreted and recommendations sent to referring nurseries almost immediately. A team is mobilized, treatment implemented, all in a highly standardized fashion. Sound impossible? Already in the USA there are efforts to develop remote ROP screening to offer standardized diagnosis for ophthalmologists involved in the care of infants with ROP. This is a fascinating approach to ROP management.
