Early diagnosis of preperimetric glaucoma is an intensive area of research, largely as glaucomatous damage to the neuroretinal structure and vision loss is irreversible, and neuroregenerative therapies are still some way off if at all. In this issue of Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, Na et al. present findings from spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD ОСТ) analysis of the macula suggesting a role in diagnosis of preperimetric glaucoma. As technologies developed, the majority of studies in this field have come to focus on the utilization of SD ОСТ, with the higher resolution offered to look specifically at thinning of the retinal nerve fibre layer and ganglion cell layer of the retina, usually termed the ganglion cell complex.
