Novel Network Architecture and Business Model for Consolidated LTE/WLAN Heterogeneous Network with Tight Cooperation

This paper proposes a novel network architecture and its related business model in order to stimulate rapid expansion of LTE/WLAN heterogeneous network (HetNet) systems by using wireless LANs operated by third parties. The proposal is based on two fundamental ideas - Inter-RAN Exchange (IRX) and the concept of infrastructure leasing and resource sharing. IRX is a novel framework to establish a virtual, cooperative and trustable network between EPCs and third-party Radio Access Networks (3RANs). Through IRX, 3RAN administrators may lease their infrastructures, of which resources are to be shared by mobile network operators (MNOs). A case study demonstrates that the proposed business model promoted by the proposed HetNet has positive financial benefits for both MNOs and 3RAN administrators, while better user experience could be delivered.
