YAMAHA OX99 was used for the 1991 and 1992 Formula One Championship Racing Season. According to the regulation in 199l it is a natural aspirated 3.5 litter engine and V12 engine. Configuration was chosen to achieve the high output at the high engine speed. Hut the V 12 configuration tends to increase the engine size and weight. The main development target was set to pursue the high performance taking advantage of the V12 configuration and to minimize the size and the weight under disadvantage of the V12 configuration. To realize the target, the following three technologies were used: (1) The 5-valve technology was used to minimize the engine size. (2) The light weight moving parts were used to achieve the high engine speed and performance. ( 2 piston ring configuration piston, 5-valve configuration) (3) The titanium and magnesium parts were positively used to reduce the engine weight. The maximum power of 54ok was delivered at 13,200r.p.m. and the very light dry weight was 147kg.
