Variety Testing of Apples in Belgium

In Belgium at almost 65%, Jonagold remains main apple variety. With one main variety, experiencing a disadvantage such as a low yield (e.g. from spring night frost, off-years), or low prices, there is a much larger impact on the earnings of the fruitgrower and on our market position than when the risk is spread over more varieties. For this reason, the "Proeftuin pit- en steenfruit" in Sint-Truiden (Belgium) observes every year several new apple varieties, which come from all over the world and which can be grown in addition to Jonagold.
