Feathered nursery trees are a critical component of most high-density apple and pear planting systems including the Tall Spindle. Nursery trees for Tall Spindle orchards should ideally have from 10 to 15 feathers per tree. Trees with feathers providebearing surface for production in the second and third years. Early bearing is essential to help pay for increased tree numbers and establishment costs.
