For the effective use of slotted wheels, an optimal groove pattern, i.e. the type of slot and the slot-ratio must be properly selected for the purpose and the method of grinding. Effects of the groove pattern on the grinding performance are experimentally investigated in creep feed grinding of hardened steel. Both the specific energy and the wheel life increase with increasing slot-ratio. A 33% slot-ratio wheel consumes only half of the specific energy required by conventional no-slot wheels, and its life is extended up to three times. The grinding ratio is affected by the increase of the slot-ratio. The surface roughness is not effected so much with the use of slotted wheels with less than 20% slot-ratio.
