摘要

This paper first introduces the concept of the HLW (High-Level radioactive Waste) disposal in underground and its typical issues for realization. To briefly understand what have been developed regarding geological investigation technologies in real world of underground constructions, Chapter 2 and 3 summarizes the state-of-the-art technologies for tunnel and pumped storage hydropower projects, which have already been practically realized in Japan. Chapter 3 also discusses the outcomes of R & D works for the pumped storage project with cavern-style lower lake. Then, important tasks on the site and environmental characterization methodologies for HLW disposal in Japan will be summarized as the authors' opinion for effectively advancing future research activities of investigation technologies.
