The effect and characteristics of a wide vibrating subsoiler for downhill subsoiling and contour line subsoiling in sloping fields were investigated based on the subsoiler operation performance, soil physical properties and yield. These studies were performed in a field with a 10 deg slope. 1) When the machine was used for downhill subsoiling on sloping fields, the steering performance was stable and field efficiency was equivalent to that of contour line subsoiling. Attention should be paid to complex steering in the case of contour line subsoiling. 2) It was obvious that soil layer loosening results in the increase of the gas phase ratio, decrease of soil hardness, and improvement of drainage. Although the surface soil was well tilled, surface runoff of water and soil of a rainfall intensity of less than 10mm/h was minimal. 3) ,Soil layer loosening could be effective in the improvement of yield. Downhill subsoiling was suitable for growing corn because of the good drainage. Counter line subsoiling gave good results for growing Japanese radish because of the remarkable water retention ability. 4) In the sowing system using a stripe cultivation rotary seeder after soil layer loosening, water and soil surface runoff was reduced to 60% of that of the sowing system using a shallow cultivation rotary seeder. The former system gave a yield of corn and Japanese radish equivalant to that of the latter system.
