US ARMY COMMANDERS had long wished for a modern attack helicopter to deal with the Soviet armoured threat. The AH-1 Cobra had always been considered a stop-gap measure. Instead, commanders were demanding a highly capable, heavily-armed, survivable, high-performance machine capable of operating at tree-top height against an emerging range of new threats such as radar-guided anti-aircraft guns and mobile surface-to-air missiles.
