Effect of early-stage shading of direct seeded rice on growth and yield components.

Rice cv. Kibinohana seedlings were grown in pots under 0, 50, 80 or 95% shading for 16 or 28 days after emergence in 1995, and for 25 or 34 days in 1996. Heavy shading delayed heading and tillering. Under heavy shading, the number and culm diameterof tillers which emerged after 2 to 3 weeks were lower than under light shading. Under 95% shading, the number of tillers which emerged after 2 to 3 weeks, the survival rate and the spikelet number were lower than under light shading. The spikelet numberand the percentage of ripened grains were low in late-emerging tillers.
