Genetic background of highly palatable cultivars of rice.

The genetic background of highly-palatable (HP) rice cultivars developed by Fukuoka Agricultural Research Centre was studied and compared with high-yielding cultivars developed by Kyushu National Agricultural Experimental Station and Miyazaki Agricultural Experimental Station. Coefficients of parentage (COP) between these cultivars and several major cultivars were calculated. HP cultivars exhibited high COP values with Koshihikari, a renowned HP cultivar. High-yielding cultivars showed low COP values with Koshihikari, and high COP values with Shinrei, Toyotama, Hoyoku and others, which used to be grown extensively in northern Kyushu and are believed to have wide adaptability there. These cultivars showed low COP values with HP cultivars. It is recommended that genes from germplasm with wide adaptability be introduced into future HP cultivars in order to increase genetic diversity.
