BARAK 2020: ISRAELI F-16C/D UPGRADE

The upgrade line for Israel's latest F-16 modification was unveiled in a ceremony at Hatzor air base on January 23. Combat Aircraft examines the Barak 2020 enhancement effort now being introduced on Israel's fleet of F-16C/D Fighting Falcons. The backbone of the Israel Air and Space Force (IASF) fighter arm is provided by three major F-16 variants. The oldest are the F-16A/B Netz (Sparrowhawk) jets that entered service with the Israeli Defence Force in the early 1980s. These jets took part in the Iraqi nuclear reactor raid in 1981 and the battle over Lebanon's Bekaa valley in June 1982, shooting down dozens of Syrian MiG fighters. Today the Netz fleet is charged with schooling young pilots in two operational training units at Nevatim, while an adversary 'Red' squadron operates from Ovda.
