Development of Sustainable Paddy Farming Technology and the Role of Agricultural Higher Education

摘要

The purpose of this report is to discuss the possibility of sustainable paddy farming and to emphasize the importance of agricultural higher education in the farming through the survey of productivity on the two cases of sustainable paddy farming in Japan. In the case of extremely low input paddy farming, it was necessary for yield increasing to do following requisites on this farming; (1) careful selection of cultivar; (2) cultural method to use natural supplied nitrogen; and (3) realizing growth pattern of autumn vigor type. To increase the yield in the case of alternative paddy farming, it was necessary to decay enough organic matter, and to return the winter weeds in the field for nitrogen supply to rice plants. From the above, specific recommendations for sustainable agriculture in relation with higher education are followings; (1) the agricultural system utilizing ecology must be put in agricultural higher education; and (2) many capable men recognized importance of sustainable agriculture inhigher education should play a leading part in the agriculture operation.
