Effects of different environmental conditions on growth and absorption of inorganic components in halophyte Suaeda species

Suaeda glauca and Suaeda salsa were grown under different NaCl concentrations (0,150, 300, 450, and 600 mM) and temperatures (10, 20, and 30°C) to clarify the suitable growth conditions for these species. The dry weight of S. glauca tended to increase at NaCl concentrations of150 mM and 300 mM compared to the control(0 mM). The dry weight increased significantly at 300 mM NaCl in S. salsa. The Na content increased as the NaCl concentration increased. The CI content increased under all NaCl treatments other than the control. These results indicate that these plants absorb Na and C! to enhance their osmotic adjustment. However, the K content decreased with increases in the NaCl concentration. The plant height and dry weight of these plants tended toincrease with increases in temperature. However, the dry weights of plants grown at 20°C and 30°C were not significantly different. These results suggested that 2O-30°C was a suitable temperature range for growing these plants. These results indicatethat these two Suaeda species have different growth patterns compared with most higher plants under saline conditions, and that the cultivation of 5. glauca and S. salsa can contribute to the effective utilization of saline soils.
