The effects of saline irrigation water (rain water added with 4 g/l NaCl) on growth and yield of 'Altea' zucchini squash were investigated in relation to two plant establishment methods (transplanting and direct sowing) using soil-filled benches inan unheated plastic greenhouse. Transplanting was carried out with transplants grown in two media (peat and perlite) and in two cell sizes (130 and 330 cm3). Yield of zucchini, number and fresh weight of male flowers, and shoot and root fresh and dry weights were recorded. On average, yields were reduced about 36% by salinity stress compared with control. Plants established by transplanting and produced in peat exhibited higher yield than those produced in perlite and direct sowing. No difference was observed for the cell sizes. Number and fresh weight of male flowers were higher in direct sown plants. The saline conditions produced a more developed root system and increased collar diameter in all treatments.
