Agricultural water consumption limitation and sustainable development in arid areas of Northwest China - a case study in Minqin County, Gansu Province.

摘要

This study examines the proper agricultural water consumption limitation and its influences in Northwest China, particularly in Minqin, Gansu Province. The study used mostly four years average of prices and cost of crops from 2003-06. Water data was drawn from the Main Irrigation Plan in Minqin. Results show that it is difficult for the arid areas to develop through subsistence agriculture which means that the farmers have to secure their food and feed needs by themselves. Giving up water-intensive crop cultivation is suggested.
