A cooperative system of cut flowers and leadership: a case study of the establishment of a production centre for cut roses in the eastern part of Ehime Prefecture.

摘要

A successful cooperative of cut flower farmers in the Toyo district in Ehime Prefecture (Japan) in 2003 was studied. Success was brought about by one knowledgeable farmer with strong leadership skills, despite many difficulties due to the cut flower market characteristics (such as small size, segmented seasonal demand and variety of products). The cooperative plans flower production, sorts out technical problems, and selects quality roses to achive cooperative sales with homogeneity of flowers. The good relationship between the leader and members motivates them to work cooperatively.
