The Peculiarity of the House Constituent in Native Fijian Villages

We visited ten native Fijian villages in 1996. We surveyed three of them, which located in the rural area, in detail. We found that villages which are located in the suburban area, incorporated both traditional native Fijian characteristics as well asmodern characteristics. We surveyed two villages located in the suburban area in 1997. One of the purposes of the survey in 1997 was to compare the differences on the living environment, especially on the houses between the villages in the rural area and the suburban area. In this paper we are not concerned with the economical problems of each village. Instead, we wanted to focus on the universal relation between some factors on a house plan and the village people's lifestyle.
