Effects of exudates from herb roots on the fungal propagation of fusarium in hydroponics

Occurrence of plant diseases in hydroponics is now a serious problem in particular, because of the use of solid medium. This study was made to examine the effectiveness of disease control by a biological method based on the mixed planting of vegetable with herds, instead of physical or chemical control. In the hydroponic culture of melons, growung together with herbs such as thyme and fennel plants has been effective in protecting the melons from infection by Fusarium, and it has also improved the growth of melons. This protective effect might be dependent on the essential oil components, such as thymol, carvacrol and anethole, that are exudated from the herb roots into the nutrient solution.
