In field trials conducted between 1989 and 1991 in the Central Lithuanian Plain, the effects of winter or spring rape and their immediately preceding crops (potatoes, clover, vetch+oats, winter wheat, barley, winter rape or spring rape) on properties of gleyed dernopodzolic light loam soil were investigated. For winter rape, soil organic matter contents (SOMC) were greatest (3.3%) after cultivation of clover. For spring rape, SOMC were greatest (3.2%) after cultivation of winter rape. SOMC after winter rape were similar to SOMC after its preceding crops. SOMC after spring rape were 0.4-0.5% less than SOMC after its preceding crops. Nutrient uptake by winter rape was greater than spring rape. For crops preceding winter rape, contents of mineral N in soil were greatest after vetch+oats and spring rape, and lowest after clover. For crops preceding winter rape, contents of S in soil were greatest after winter or spring rape.
