Experiments carried out in eastern Siberia, Russia, in 1990-95 showed that the level of mineral nutrition at sowing of winter wheat on fallow did not influence autumn development of the plants. Adaptation of winter wheat was a result of adequate provision of moisture. Accumulation of carbohydrates was determined by temperature conditions, reaching 50% (absolute dry weight) in late autumn. This level of carbohydrate content ensures successful overwintering of the crop.
