Seed dormancy is one of the essential genetic characters for wild seed-propagated plant species to maintain their populations under a variable environment. Some Aegilops species have a dormant grain in the lower (1st) floret and a non-dormant grain inthe upper (2nd) floret when both florets have grains in a spikelet; the latter germinates quickly after the beginning of autumn rain, while the former germinates slowly until winter or germinates in the next autumn. In wild Triticum species, we have revealed, from the experiments under a controlled condition, that genetically dormant plants set dimorphic grains in a spikelet as Aegilops species. In December of 2010 and 2011, we surveyed a total of seven natural populations in Kartal Dagi region of southern Turkey to observe the germination of wild diploid (T. boeoticum and/or T. urartu) and tetraploid (T. dicoccoides and/or T. araraticum) wheat species. The results are presented here.
