A new HFC-245fa system was developed using a design of experiments in which the catalysts levels, masterbatch temperatures, isocyanate temperatures, and formulation viscosities were varied in an L8 fractional factorial design. The physical properties of the HFC-245fa system was improved by maintaining the masterbatch and isocyanate temperatures at the lowest levels and the catalyst and formulation viscosity at the intermediate levels. The system had lower freeze stable density at a lower packing level and k-factors lower by about 4% at 35 °F and about 3% higher at 75 °F.
