Effect of Network Modifiers on Spectroscopic Properties of Erbium-doped Phosphate Glasses

The integrated absorption cross section SIGMA_(abs), peak emission cross section sigma_(emi), Judd- Ofeld intensity parameters OMEGA_t (t = 2,4,6), and spontaneous emission probability A_R of Er~(3+) ions were determined for Erbium, doped alkali and alkaline earth phosphate glasses . It is found the compositional dependence of sigma_(emi) is almost similar to that of OMEGA_(abs), which is determined by the sum of OMEGA_t, (3OMEGA_2 + 10OMEGA_4 + 21OMEGA_6). In addition , the compositional dependence off], was studied in these glass systems . As a result, compared with OMEGA_4 and OMEGA_6, the OMEGA_2 has a stronger compositional dependence on the ionic radius and content of modifiers . The covalency of Er- 0 bonds in phosphate glass is weaker than that in silicate glass , germanate glass, aluminale glass, and tellurate glass, since OMEGA_6 of phosphate glass is relatively large. A_R is affected by the covalency of the Er~(3+) ion sites and corresponds to the OMEGA_6 value.
