The exciting opportunities now offered through scholarship and funds for research by nurses are described elsewhere in this edition and they are considerable. As clinical academic careers become better articulated and funded, some of the more significant impediments that have stood in the way of research by nurses are dissolving. The surrounding infrastructure is less well defined, however, it is important to pay attention to this as much as the proper funding of scholarship. The professions other than medicine and dentistry have yet to pay proper attention regarding their responsibilities in supporting and developing the next generation of nurse, midwife and health visitor researchers. This must come from within the professions themselves.
