摘要

This is an important paper recognising the ways in which lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) people may be socially excluded, and the relevance of the concept of social exclusion in relation to health inequalities and the implications for promoting health equity in nursing policy and practice. Definitions of social exclusion are contested but the author draws upon Percy-Smith's (2000) work which is useful in addressing issues across the life course and which can be related to health issues. The paper addresses issues relating to LGBT people, although in part cites evidence that focuses solely on LGB populations. For example, evidence which challenges the perception that LGB people are likely to have higher than average incomes - which obscures the extent to which the economic dimension of social exclusion is relevant to LGB people. Other citations address the social dimension of social exclusion and include reports which provide evidence about upstream factors which have a detrimental impact on the health of LGB people.
