In healthcare settings today, particularly those in the developed world, our nurse managers are faced with many challenges as they strive to ensure the delivery of high-quality care. Staffing shortages, increasing patient acuity, rising demand for services and difficulties in achieving a timely discharge for patients are common to many nurse managers across the world. Furthermore, nurse managers are being called on to possess a complex suite of skills and knowledge, often with minimal preparation. The reviewed paper reflects this complexity through the number of items contained in the competence measure. The authors acknowledge that further testing is needed to refine the instrument and potentially reduce the 194 items down to a more manageable number. However, the example questions that are provided capture the breadth of knowledge, skills and other attributes that nurse managers must master in order for them to competently lead and manage their teams.
