Validation of the Mobile Emotiv Device Using a Neuroscan Event-Related Potential System

Commercially available Emotiv headset has been used to capture EEG for gaming applications. The present study extended the validation of Emotiv system using Neuroscan system by comparison of the characteristics of behavioral data and Event-Related Potentials (ERPs). ERPs of 30 normal subjects were induced by an auditory oddball task, in which the amplitudes and latencies of Ni, N2, and P3 were specifically analyzed. Reaction time (RT) and response accuracy were derived from synchronously recorded behavioral data. Compared to Neuroscan system, RT detected by Emotiv device was longer; however, the RT variations in both systems were not significantly different. Response accuracy in two systems was consistent. The patterns of amplitude Ni, N2, and P3 in ERPs were similar. These comparative results confirmed that Emotiv device could provide reliable auditory ERP signals, suggesting its potential for further development in medical applications.
