In trying to compose this article, the writer feels himself to be an imposter. The result would have been so much more worthy of the subject and of the English language if it could have been written by William Bulwer-Long who was awarded the BledisloeGold Medal for Landowners in 1996. William received the news of the award whilst in Papworth Hospital, Cambridge where he was recovering from a heart attack. The news was a great boost to his morale as an acknowledgement of all that he had worked for over the last 32 years. He set himself the goal of getting fit to receive the Medal at the Royal Show in July. Tragically, this was not to be as William died just over a week later at the age of 58.
