The influence of atmospheric wind on wind noise in car cabins was studied in various on-road situations, and in the Monash University-Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University (RMIT) full-scale wind-tunnel, in Melbourne, Australia. Air-flow turbulence characteristics and car interior sound were recorded and analysed. Subjectively, the recorded wind-tunnel and on-road wind noises sound substantially different. Standard signal processing techniques of averaging several noise spectra to get an averaged sound spectrum were found to be inadequate for showing the wind-noise variation due to turbulence. Recommendations were made on alternative testing and data processing methods, in order to identify the temporal effects of atmospheric turbulence on vehicle wind noise.
