Numericalsimulationofturbulentflowspasttypicaltrussstructuresthatarecommoninbridgesand towershasbeenconducted.Large-eddysimulation(LES)methodisusedthathasbeenverifiedin computingflowspastsimplebodiesatmoderateReynoldsnumbers.Trussstructuresconsistofthin membersthataretoosmalltobeaccuratelyresolvedbynumericalgridsthatcanbehandledbymost computersystems.Ithasbeenfoundthatwhentheindividualmembersarelongangularbars,the overallflowcanbereproducedfairlywellbyapproximatingthememberswithrectangularcylinders whosecrosssectionsareresolvedbymorethan22 computationalcellsandbytakingcomputational regions extendingatleastfourstructureheightsdownstreamandaboutthreeheightsacrossthe vertical andspanwisedirections.Thedragcoefficientandthevortexsheddingcharacteristicsalongwith the complexwakestructuresassociatedwiththetrussstructuresarereproducedreasonablywell.
