Magnesia-carbon bricks generally are applied to the part of steel ladles slag line, which requires an excellent resistance against erosion. Carbonless basic refractories such as magnesia-spinel bricks and magnesia-chrome bricks are occasionally applied to a steel ladle to prevent carbon pick-up. These bricks are inferior when resisting the penetration of slag, which causes structural appalling; however they are superior when resisting erosion. Furthermore, an unburned alumina-spinel brick which is a typical non-carbon brick1', in which spinel is formed during the procedure, has excellent resistance against the penetration of slag, although its resistance against erosion is not sufficient as a brick intended for slag line use.
