Changes were made to improve SG plate life and reduce the cost at the No.l Steelmaking Plant of Kashima Steel Works, by reducing the SG plate bore size, improving the refractory materials, using a 2-piece configuration, and improving the plate shape. The changes resulted in the SG plate life being improved 33 percent, and the cost being reduced 61 percent, compared with the conventional products. In the future, it is expected that with the improvement of operations and refractory technology there will be still more improvement in the SG plate life and a further reduction in the cost.
