In Kimitsu Works, NSSMC, the service life of the wear lining of bottom bricks of hot metal ladles determines the interval of the scheduled repairs, because that is the lining part with the shortest life among the various parts in the hot metal ladles. Considering the volume stability and the chemical corrosion by desulfurization slag, pyrophyllite-Al_2O_3-SiC-C bricks have been used for the bottom wear lining, but they exhibit the problem of surface layer peeling. Therefore, by focusing on the thermal characteristics of SiO_2, which expands and shrinks in the range of temperature around 573°C, it was possible to improve the service life of ladle bottom bricks by preventing the surface layer peeling by maintaining the ladles continuously at temperatures >573°C, and to greatly increase the time between scheduled repairs.
