Improved System for Viewing the Interior of High Temperature Furnaces

When the temperature inside a furnace is higher than 800 deg C, general observation probes can't provide sharp images of the refractory lining because the light emitted from the subject itself decreases the contrast, and there is atmospheric distortion. To overcome these problems, we (Shinagawa) developed a technique using various combinations of special optical filters to eliminate image distortion by heat to permit observation of joints, holes, uneven refractory lining surfaces in furnace at 800 to 1300 deg C. Table 1 shows the filter choices for observations at various furnace temperatures. Because our special filter combination technology makes it possible to make observations inside furnaces at high temperature, we will apply it for other commercial furnaces.
