Blood samples with moderate and severe haemolysis were produced from each of 10 healthy iguanas by freezing, centrifuging and decanting plasma from a portion of each blood sample, and combining the non-haemolysed plasma with different amounts of haemolysed plasma from the same individual. Nine plasma analytes (sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, uric acid, total protein, albumin, aspartate aminotransferase and creatine kinase) were measured using a Vitros 250 Chemistry analyser. Moderate haemolysis significantly increased plasma phosphorus levels. Severe haemolysis significantly increased plasma values of potassium, phosphorus, total protein and aspartate aminotransferase. It is concluded that the severity of haemolysis must be considered wheninterpreting values for these analytes in iguana plasma.
