A new oligomerization procedure for phenol byproducts from coke production is experimentally studied. This method, oxidative combination, is intended to produce an effective coinhibitor of styrene ther-mopolymerization. When combined with a Mannich base, the new oligomer exhibits excellent inhibiting prop-erties in the heat treatment of styrene and matches the effectiveness of imported inhibitors based on nitroxyl radicals. Chemical modification of phenol mixtures without preliminary fractionation from raw coal-industry phe-nols produces a relatively effective phenol inhibitor of polymerization in the oil industry, as shown in [1]. Con-densation of phenol-formaldehyde resins (novolacs) is used as the method of chemical modification [2]. How-ever, tests of the phenol oligomer obtained show that it is ineffective as an inhibitor in styrene production. In other words, significantly different modification of phe-nols may be required to produce inhibitors for different processes.
