Improving the technology for making metallurgical coke is one of the most important problems in upgrading blast-furnace production under the new economic conditions [1,2]. The following methods of preparing coals and conducting coking appear the most promising: selective grinding; compaction (partial briquetting or compression); thermal charge preparation; temperature optimization in coking ovens, and dry coke quenching and treatment outside the oven. Schemes for preparing the coking charge by size reduction are divided into three groups: ordinary, differential, and selective charge grinding. The basic principle in preparing coals is as follows: with restricted contents and sizes for the extreme classes, it is necessary to equalize the compositions of all the classes [3]. Organizations in the CIS countries have devised and implemented various schemes for differentiated and selective grinding of coals and charges [4]. Plants in the Ukraine working with imported material do not crush the concentrates of Donets bituminous and coking coals containing 70-80 percent of the class <3 mm, while coals of grades G and OS, as well as Kuznetsk coals, are crushed separately. At organizations that have their own dressing plants, the dressing scheme has a considerable effect on the technology for preparing coal for coking [5].
