Aortoesophageal fistula after stent-graft treatment of an aortic arch mycotic aneurysm: treatment with embolization and covered esophageal stent.

Mycotic aneurysms of the thoracic aorta are rare but life-threatening. Although Kan et al (1) reported that endovascular graft treatment of mycotic aneurysms is associated with a lower mortality rate than open surgical repair (10.4% vs 40%), the development of an aortoesophageal fistula after endovascular graft therapy to repair aortic aneurysms carries a high mortality rate. We report the successful treatment by transarterial coil embolization and esophageal covered stent placement of an aortoesophageal fistula that developed after endovascular stent placement for a mycotic aneurysm of the aortic arch.
