Evaluation of efficacy of ivermectin and fenbendazole against natural infection of gastrointestinal helminths of equines

Drug trials were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of ivermectin and fenbendazole against gastrointestinal helminths of equines. In these trials, 30 animals were selected which were positive for gastrointestinal helminths (strongyles, Strongyloses, ascarids, oxyurids and amphistomes) and were divided into three groups of ten animals each. First group was treated with ivermectin, second with fenbendazole and the third was left as untreated control. Faecal samples and blood samples were collected on days 0, 7 and 14. Ivermectin showed greater efficacy (96 %) then fenbendazole (92.59 %) in reducing the parasitic load. An increase in haemoglobin and PCV was noted in both the treatment groups on days 7 and 14 post treatment.
