A study was conducted to determine the effect of feeding chlamydospores (from D. flagrans isolated from sheep in India) to calves naturally infected with trichostrongyles on the dispersal of preparasitic stages from dung pats to the surrounding herbage. The inoculated fungus was recovered from faecal fungal cultures from fungus-fed calves only 72 h after the fist dosing of chlamydospores. Thereafter, abundant fungi weres recovered throughout the experiment. The results indicated that the recoveryof trichostrongyle larvae from pasture plots was significantly lower (P < 0.0001) in plots contaminated by the faeces of fungus-fed calves at day 12 of sampling and onwards compared with those contaminated by the faeces of controls. A significant effect(P < 0.05) on the larval populations in in vitro faecal cultures was observed from day 8 onwards.
