Pathogenesis-related proteins play an important role in plant defense against pathogens. Sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacryl-amide gel-electrophoresis of intercellular fluid collected from pea leaves after treatment with 5 mM salicylic acid (SA) resulted in the appearance of a new protein band of 96.7 kDa 48 hours after treatment. Treatment with 1 and 3 mM concentration of SA did not show any variation in the protein profile as compared with control leaves. However, there was an increase in the total protein content. Inoculation of pea leaves with spores of Erysiphe polygoni f. sp. pisi DC also resulted in the appearance of a new protein band 24 hours after inoculation with an increase in total protein content. Treatment with 5 mM S A appears to mimicthe effect of inoculation with E. polygoni in synthesis of the new protein. This response may have implications in development of plant protection strategies.
