Over the past eight years, the British Hydromechanics Research Association, with the support of the National Coal Board, has carried out a series of investigations to study the pressure losses in particular features of mine-ventilation systems. Certain of these studies related to existing designs, where limited scope was available for making changes in design which would result in a saving of fan power cost. At the same time a more generalised study was undertaken to establish broad principles of design, which would lead to the development of an economic standard ventilation layout. This paper presents a brief review of this generalised investigation. The use of models is becoming much more common, and it is probably unnecessary in this paper to repeat the basic principles of model testing; a discussion of these already exists in the paper by Kemp. The models used in these experiments inevitably operated at a Reynold's number considerably lower than would occur in practice, but, as the losses were in general insensitive to Reynold's number, this discrepancy was of no significance.
